What is Exercise Stress Echocardiography?

Exercise Stress Echo combines a treadmill stress test with real-time echocardiography.
It evaluates how your heart performs under physical stress, helping detect early signs of reduced blood flow (ischemia) that may not appear at rest.
It is more sensitive than a routine treadmill test (TMT) alone.

Why is Stress Echo Done?

Recommended for evaluation of:

  • Chest pain
  • Exercise-induced breathlessness
  • Suspected coronary artery disease
  • Borderline ECG or TMT results
  • Fitness clearance before surgery
  • Monitoring treatment response in cardiac patients

It helps detect:

  • Poor blood flow to heart muscles
  • Stress-induced changes in heart function
  • Exercise-induced valve problems
  • Overall exercise tolerance

Before the Test

What to Expect During the Test

  1. Resting Echo
    • Images of your heart are taken at rest.
  2. Treadmill Exercise
    • You walk/run on a treadmill with gradually increasing speed and incline.
  3. Post-Exercise Echo
    • Immediately after exercise, echo images are captured to look for stress-induced abnormalities.
The entire procedure takes 30–45 minutes.

After the Test
