What is 2D ECHO?

Echocardiography, commonly called ECHO, is a non-invasive ultrasound test that uses high-frequency sound waves to create live images of the heart.
It helps assess:

  • Heart pumping function
  • Condition of heart valves
  • Size and thickness of heart chambers
  • Fluid around the heart
  • Blood flow patterns
  • Structural abnormalities

ECHO provides detailed insights that go far beyond what an ECG or X-ray can show.

Why is ECHO Done?

Your doctor may recommend an ECHO for:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Palpitations
  • History of hypertension or diabetes
  • Heart murmurs
  • Suspected valve disease
  • Swelling in legs
  • Monitoring heart diseases
  • Follow-up after cardiac procedures

It helps diagnose:

  • Heart failure
  • Valve stenosis or regurgitation
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Congenital defects
  • Pericardial effusion
  • Pulmonary hypertension

Before the Test

  • No special preparation is needed.
  • You can eat, drink, and take medications as usual.

What to Expect During the Test

  • The test is performed by a trained technician and reviewed by a cardiologist.
  • You will lie on your left side.
  • A warm gel is applied to the chest and a probe (transducer) is moved over the chest to capture images.
  • The test is painless and takes 20–30 minutes.

After the Test

You can resume normal activities.
A detailed report by our senior cardiologist will be provided, including heart function (EF%), valve status, and any structural findings.
