What is Digital Mammography?
Digital mammography is a specialized type of breast imaging that uses low-dose X-rays to create digital images of the breast. It’s an advanced form of mammography that replaces traditional film with digital detectors, allowing the images to be viewed on a computer screen. This makes it easier for radiologists to examine the breast tissue in detail and detect abnormalities, such as tumors or cysts, even in dense breast tissue.
Digital mammograms are commonly used for both screening and diagnostic purposes — to look for breast cancer in women without symptoms or to investigate lumps, pain, or other concerns. Compared to traditional mammography, digital mammography offers faster image acquisition, improved image storage, and enhanced ability to manipulate images for better clarity.
How to Prepare for Digital Mammography:
- Wear Comfortable Clothing: On the day of your mammogram, wear a two-piece outfit so you only need to remove your top.
- Avoid Deodorants, Powders, or Lotions: Do not apply deodorants, antiperspirants, powders, or lotions under your arms or on your breasts, as these can appear as white spots on the images and affect the results.
- Inform About Breast Symptoms or Concerns: Let the technologist know if you have any breast symptoms, concerns, or a history of breast surgeries or implants, as this helps tailor the exam to your needs.
- Schedule at the Right Time: If you still have menstrual cycles, try to schedule the mammogram one week after your period when your breasts are less tender.
- Bring Prior Mammogram Images: If you’ve had mammograms at another facility, bring previous images or arrange to have them sent, so the radiologist can compare past and current images for any changes.
- Relax and Communicate: During the exam, the technologist will position your breast between two plates for compression, which can feel uncomfortable but should only last a few seconds. Let them know if you experience too much discomfort.
