Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) is a method used to measure blood pressure over a 24-hour period while a patient goes about their normal daily activities. This is done using a small, portable device that automatically takes blood pressure readings at regular intervals throughout the day and night. ABPM provides a more accurate picture of a person’s blood pressure compared to single readings taken in a doctor’s office. It is especially useful in diagnosing conditions like white coat hypertension (high blood pressure in a clinical setting) or masked hypertension (normal readings in the clinic but high readings outside). ABPM helps healthcare providers assess how blood pressure behaves during sleep, activity, and periods of stress.
